Communication Skills
Communication Skills focuses on reading and writing strategies to help prepare students to be successful in 9th Grade Literature. Students will be using the Read 180 program to work on important verbal skills and to build academic vocabulary in order to master high school literature standards.
In Unit 1 we will explore the theme of "At First Sight" as we read a variety of texts centered on topics such as optical illusions, memory, perception, and eyewitness testimonies. Students will work on finding the main idea with supporting evidence, determining the theme, analyzing characters, writing objective summaries, and writing an informative essay. Students will take a halfway assessment and end-of-unit assessment.

30% Reading (reading quizzes, Alternative Book Reports, reading logs, etc.)
10% Language (grammar, vocab, etc.)
10 % Speaking/Listening (notes, presentations, discussions, etc.)

9th Grade Literature
Passing 9th Lit is a requirement to be promoted to 10th Grade. 9th Lit students will take the EOC Milestone at the end of the semester which will count 20% of their grade.
The overarching theme of the semester is "coming of age." We will be using the SpringBoard textbook throughout the semester. We will read Romeo and Juliet as well as a variety of short stories, poems, and informational texts.
